At IUB, why is my computer data jack not working properly, and whom should I contact for help?

If your Indiana University Bloomington data jack is not working properly, first check to see if it is active. Data jacks in IUB campus housing residences are always turned on. To find out if your office data jack is turned on, ask your departmental computing support provider or main office, or query the UITS Network Operations Datajacks Database.

If you need to activate a data jack in your IUB campus office, see At IUB, how do I activate the data jack in my campus office?

If your data jack (the RJ-45 data plug or connector that resembles a modular telephone line plug) is inserted a fraction of an inch too far, the connection may work intermittently or not at all. The best way to insert the plug is to push it in until the locking tab "clicks" and then pull back slightly.

If you still can't connect and suspect equipment failure, do the following:

  • If you live in campus housing, call the UITS Support Center at 812-855-6789, or visit the Residential IT Services (RITS) office.

The RITS office is located in Teter F206, and is open Monday-Friday 1-5pm in the summer, and Monday-Thursday 1-9pm and Friday 1-5pm during fall and spring semesters.

  • If you are in an IUB campus office, contact your departmental computing support provider. You may also send an email message to  noc@indiana.edu  with the building, room number, and data jack number in question (the data jack should be labeled with the number).
