How will space decisions be made?
The University Information Technology Services (UITS) and school transition teams will determine if common use space should transfer to UITS. If there is common agreement to do so, responsibility for maintaining the space and paying its assessments will transfer to UITS as well.
What will happen to the equipment in Student Technology Centers that transfer to UITS?
The equipment inventory in general purpose Student Technology Centers (STCs), as identified by the transition teams, will transfer to UITS. Older technology will be modernized and placed on a lifecycle replacement plan. UITS will replace equipment at regular intervals as part of its commitment to the lifecycle funding and modernization principles of the IT Strategic Plan.
How is a standard software list determined, and can additional applications be added?
The UITS STCs provide IUPUI students with access to a broad range of applications in support of the academic mission of the university. Additionally, specialized applications used by a broad cross-section of students are provided. Departments may request that additional applications be provided for the use of their students in order to meet disciplinary requirements. This software may be funded by UITS or by the department, or by cost sharing through mutual agreement.
What will be done regarding licensing agreements for software used by schools?
The transition teams will identify software currently being licensed by schools and will explore possibilities for licensing agreements for applications currently not leveraged across schools or campuses. Faculty members may request that UITS install software on campus systems.
Can I use Seat Finder to locate an open spot in an STC?
Yes, access Seat Finder for IUPUI at:
http://stc.iupui.edu/seatfinder.phpWill Macintosh computers be supported?
UITS provides support for Macintosh as well as Windows users, through the Support Center and this Knowledge Base. Software is available from IUware.
Will Linux be used in Student Technology Centers?
Despite the popularity and prevalence among the computer programming and application development community, and its use as the backbone for enterprise servers, Linux is not often used as a mainstream operating system for end user desktop applications. Hence, Linux is supported for use by departments, but it is not installed as the operating system on campus-wide Student Technology Center computers.
How does this initiative impact students whose hardware requirements have diminished?
By working with the school-based transition teams and engaging students for input and feedback, UITS will strive to find the right level in providing sufficient hardware accessibility for IUPUI undergraduates. Trends in mobility and virtualization are being studied carefully and will be considered in planning the campus's general purpose IT services. The trend is currently moving away from traditional desktop STC services, although the need for these facilities will continue for several years. Use of laptops and mobile devices continues to grow and converge. The plan will address changing IT requirements.
What will happen to general-use computer classrooms currently managed by schools?
Within three years or sooner, general purpose computer classrooms will become part of the campus classroom inventory. Scheduling details are being developed by UITS and the Registrar, who has overall responsibility for general inventory classroom scheduling. UITS will provide IT support.
What is the new plan for student printing at IUPUI?
UITS and IUPUI Campus Card Services (Jagtag) have collaborated to switch from the Pay-to-Print system to a print allocation system funded by the undergraduate Student Technology Fee (STF) beginning April 1, 2009. UITS is now offering IUPUI undergraduates up to 650 black and white pages per semester in designated STCs at no additional charge to them. This change applies to printers in public facilities that currently have card readers for charging. Students will continue to swipe their Jagtags to print, but undergraduates won't be charged as long as they stay within the 650-page per semester allocation. The actual costs will be paid by UITS through June 30 and from the current STF afterwards. For designated locations and more information about the new undergraduate printing plan, see About printing at IUPUI.
How will campus sustainability principles be supported with this new printing plan?
UITS encourages paper conservation and recommends specific tips; see At IU, how can I conserve paper in the STCs? Beyond these suggestions, IU's new strategic plan for IT, Empowering People, includes a series of new actions through which IU will develop and implement plans for responsible environmental stewardship for information technology, including an awareness and education campaign regarding best practices in energy-efficient computing and printing.
How may individuals provide comments or suggestions to be considered in transition planning or in developing the campus model?
Students, faculty, and staff may send comments and suggestions to
