Will graduate school students be included in the plan?
The Student Technology Fee (STF) that graduate students pay is not included in this plan. However, graduate programs may opt into the plan fully or in part. Information about changes that might affect graduate students will be provided in this Knowledge Base and through future UITS communications.
What advantages and disadvantages are there in excluding the graduate and professional STF from the new model?
The graduate student STF is excluded from this change except when schools opt in to all or part of the plan. Professional school undergraduate student STF is fully included in the plan. The advantage of pooling undergraduate fees is that the fund can be leveraged to extend and expand services of importance to all undergraduates. Establishing an extensive and consistent suite of IT services across the entire campus will meet the needs of most undergraduates and will provide the foundation on which schools may offer specific services unique to their disciplines. The graduate STF was excluded because many students at that level do not require technology services outside their school. A disadvantage of excluding graduate STF from the plan is that those students may not benefit from services provided specifically by the undergraduate STF, such as a print allocation.
What additional opportunities are available for graduate schools that might opt into part or all of the plan?
The UITS transition team and graduate school representatives will explore possibilities that may be desired by these schools; for example, graduate schools that currently charge their students for printing may wish to opt into the new campus plan for student printing made possible by this change, or transfer responsibilities for managing school-based Student Technology Centers or other IT services to UITS.
