At IU, using Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), why can't I connect to some Samba interfaces?
In the initial release of Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), authentication via ADS did not work. Leopard users could not connect to the Samba interface offered by Siteshare on Webserve, the Research File Service (RFS), or the Massive Data Storage Service (MDSS) at Indiana University.
The problems with RFS and MDSS appear to have been fixed with the Mac OS X 10.5.3 upgrade released May 2008; if you are using Leopard and wish to use Samba to connect to RFS or MDSS, upgrade to 10.5.3 or higher.
To connect to Siteshare through Samba in Leopard:
- In the Finder, from the
Gomenu, selectConnect to Server....
- In the
Connect to Serverwindow, in theAddress:field, enter: smb://siteshare.uits.indiana.edu/account_nameReplace
account_namewith the name of your Webserve account. - When prompted to authenticate, for "Workgroup/Domain" enter
ADS, and for the username and password use your personal IU Network ID username and passphrase.
This issue does not affect other methods of connecting to these services. For help with other methods, see At IU, how do I access the MDSS? or consult the documents listed below.
