At IUB and IUPUI, what can I access with my wireless connection?
Registered users
If your wireless computer or mobile device at Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI is registered, you will have the following access depending on which network you use:
-
IU Secure: If you use the IU Secure network, you
will have full access to IU services. For help connecting to IU
Secure, see What is IU Secure? UITS recommends that
you use IU Secure.
-
IU Wireless with VPN: If you use the older IU
Wireless network and make a VPN connection, you will have full access
to IU services. For help setting up a VPN connection, see The basics of VPN at IU.
-
IU Wireless without VPN: If you use the older IU
Wireless network without making a VPN connection, you will be able to
access the Internet and IU email. Only encrypted access to email is
allowed, so laptops will not be able to access email using
Outlook in its normal configuration.
Specifically, within the IU network you will be able to access only resources that use the following ports:
- TCP port 22 (SSH); for example, connecting to your Quarry account
- TCP port 443 (SSL World Wide Web access [HTTPS]); for example, https://oncourse.iu.edu/
- TCP port 465 (SMTP-S)
- TCP port 636 (LDAP-S)
- TCP port 993 (IMAP-S)
- TCP port 3269 (global catalog for ADS)
- TCP port 5223 (Jabber)
- UDP port 3659 (SASL)
Unregistered users
Before you register your computer's MAC address, you will be able to access only the following resources:
- Knowledge Base
- IUware
- ITHelpLive (Live chat with a consultant; requires an IU Network ID)
