Information about print release stations at IUB

On this page:

General information

At Indiana University Bloomington, a print release station is a workstation associated with certain printers, and is dedicated to releasing output to those printers. By using a print release station, you know exactly where your output is going, and you can make sure to print only what you want. The printer you use is not dependent on the workstation you choose.

Both color and black-and-white print release stations offer the following benefits:

  • Less waste: If you accidentally send multiple jobs to the printer, you can then release only one to the printer.
  • Greater security: Others can't pick up your output, since it won't release until you are present.
  • Fewer bad prints: You can avoid printing to a malfunctioning printer.
  • Fewer printing charges: Your printing allotment is not charged until output is printed.
  • No surprises: You know how large your output is before it prints.

Black-and-white print release stations in the UITS STCs and RTCs

Print release stations for black-and-white printing are now available in all Student Technology Centers (STCs) and Residential Technology Centers (RTCs).

In addition to the benefits listed above, black-and-white print release stations offer:

  • One black-and-white print queue for all locations supporting 8.5"x11" output: The stcprt print queue serves all STC and RTC workstations and printers.
  • Convenience: You can pick up your output at any STC or RTC printer.
  • Easier wireless access: You only need a single configuration to access all STC and RTC printers.
  • A second black-and-white print queue for those locations supporting tabloid (11x17) output: The stc_tabloid print queue serves these printers.

Note: To use print release stations in the STCs and RTCs with your own computer, run the IU printer finder utility and select the All IUB Black and White STC and RTC Printers print queue.

Other STC and RTC print queues in the IU printer finder utility include:

  • All IUB Black and White STC and RTC Tabloid (11x17) Printers
  • All IUB STC and RTC $1 Color Printers
  • All IUB STC and RTC $2 HP 5550 Color Printers

Black-and-white printing instructions

To print to a black-and-white printer in the IC, STCs, and RTCs:

  1. Before you print, preview the document. Once you are satisfied, send the print job to the default stcprt print queue.

  2. Go to the print release station next to the printer you wish to use, and log in with your IU Network ID.

  3. Select one or more of your print jobs from the list.

  4. Select Print at the bottom of the screen.

Note: Be sure to log out of the print release station when you have finished.

Color print release stations in the Information Commons, and in selected STCs and RTCs

Note: Black-and-white output printed from an STC color printer costs the same as color output. The charges are based on which printer you use, not the colors you print.

In Student Technology Centers (STCs) and Residential Technology Centers (RTCs) where color printing is available, color print release stations are used to reduce the need for consultants to process routine color print jobs.

You can find Business Color (8.5"x11") print release stations in Briscoe Quad 147, Business 101 and 415, Education 2011, Information Commons, Library 502, Lindley Hall 026, Teter Quad 202, and Union Building 089.

Tabloid Color (11"x17") print release stations can be found in Fine Arts 137 and 215, and HPER 155.

Color printing instructions

To route output to a color print release station from a Windows STC or RTC workstation:

  1. Select Start, and then IU Printer Finder.

  2. Select the Bloomington campus, and then select All IUB STC and RTC $1 Color Printers (or All IUB STC and RTC $2 HP 5550 Color Printers, depending upon the type of color output you want).

  3. Click Add Printer. Be aware that if the printer was not already installed on your workstation, it may take a minute or two to install the printer.

Next, from any Windows or Mac STC or RTC workstation:

  1. Open the application from which you will print in color and prepare your document for printing.

  2. When you are ready to print, select File, and then Print.

  3. Select the color printer from the drop-down menu, and then click OK to print.

  4. Go to the print release station next to the printer, and log in with your IU Network ID.

  5. Select one or more of your print jobs from the list.

  6. Select Print at the bottom of the screen.

Note: Be sure to log out of the print release station when you have finished.
