At IU, how do I configure Outlook to connect to Exchange using RPC over HTTP (Outlook Anywhere)?
RPC over HTTP requires Outlook 2003 or newer, and Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista. To configure Outlook to connect to your Indiana University Exchange account using RPC over HTTP, follow the directions below.
Note: If you have not configured a profile already, follow the instructions in At IU, using Outlook 2007, how do I access my Exchange mailbox? or At IU, using Outlook 2002 or 2003, how do I access my Exchange mailbox?
- If you are not connected to the IU network (e.g., if you are using
another Internet service provider), connect to the IU
VPN. If you are connected to the IU network you do not need
to be connected to the IU VPN; go to the next step.
- From the
Startmenu, select eitherControl Panel, orSettingsand thenControl Panel. Select theMailicon, and then selectE-mail Accounts.
- Select
View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then clickNext. In Outlook 2007, select theEmailtab.
- Select your Exchange account or email address and click
Change....
- Click
More Settings....
- Select the
Connectiontab.
- Check
Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTPorConnect to Microsoft Exchange Using HTTPand click theExchange Proxy Settingsbutton.
- In the "Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange:" box, enter: www.exchange.iu.edu
- Check the boxes

- In the "Principal name for proxy server:" field, enter: msstd:www.exchange.iu.edu
- Check both

- In the "Proxy authentication settings" field, select
Basic Authentication.
- Click
OKtwice.
- Click
NextandFinish, and close theMail Setupdialog box.
- If connected to the VPN, you can now disconnect.
Outlook is now configured to use RPC over HTTPS. Outlook will prompt you for your ADS username and password every time it opens, and you will not have the option to save your password. This is a security feature and cannot be changed.
RPC over HTTPS is not any faster than Outlook over a VPN connection. If you are on a slow connection, consider using Outlook Web Access (OWA).
