ARCHIVED: How can I run X Window System applications on Unix systems from a Microsoft Windows workstation?
To run X Window System applications on a remote Unix computer and have the graphics displayed on your Microsoft Windows workstation, you must run an X Window server on your workstation. At Indiana University, the Research Technologies (RT) division of UITS has developed and distributes XLiveCD, a CD-ROM that lets you run an X server and forward graphics to your workstation without installing software. XLiveCD runs on Windows versions up to and including Windows XP, but does not run on Windows Vista.
For more information and to download the software, visit IU RT's XLiveCD page.
XLiveCD should perform acceptably for occasional use. If you need an X server regularly, you should purchase and install one (e.g., Hummingbird Exceed) on your workstation.
