At IU, using Mac OS X with PPP, how can I get automatic authentication to work?

For security reasons, to access the extended service modem pools at Indiana University, you must enter your Network ID. If you don't want to be prompted each time, you'll have to enter your username and passphrase in the Internet Connect PPP application in Mac OS X:

Note: If you enter this information, anyone who has access to your computer will be able to launch a PPP session and connect to the network.

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .

  2. From the View menu, select Network.

  3. In the Network preferences window:

    • In Mac OS X 10.5 and later, in the left column, click the listing for your modem.
    • In Mac OS X 10.4, make sure that the menu next to "Show:" or "Configure:" is set to the modem you're using.

  4. Enter your account settings:

    • In Mac OS X 10.5 and later, in the "Account Name:" and "Password:" fields, enter your Network ID.
    • In Mac OS X 10.4, click the PPP tab. In the "Account Name:" and "Password:" fields, enter your Network ID. Then, check Save password.
