In IUB campus housing, using Mac OS X, how do I connect to my RTC's network printer?

Note: At Indiana University Bloomington, printing to a Residential Technology Center (RTC) printer counts against your Student Technology Center (STC) printing allotment. However, IUB campus housing residents receive an extra 100-page allotment per semester. This additional allotment is usually added mid-semester. For more, see About printing at IUB.

Note: The following instructions assume you have administrative rights to your computer.

To set up your computer to use the printer in your RTC, first be sure that the short name for your OS X account on your computer is identical to your IU Network ID username. To check the short name and make changes if necessary, see the first bulleted item in At IUB or IUPUI, using Mac OS X, how do I print from my personal computer to an RTC or STC printer?

Then, log into the appropriate OS X account (i.e., the one with your Network ID username as the account short name), and follow the steps below.

Mac OS X 10.6 and later

Use the Printer Finder to connect in Mac OS X 10.6 and later:

  1. If you connected using Get Connected in fall 2010 or later, the IU Printer Finder will be under Macintosh HD, and then Applications. If the Printer Finder is not installed, you can download it from IUware.

Note: UITS recommends downloading the latest release of the Printer Finder from IUware.

  2. After opening the IU Printer Finder, select the correct printer and click Add Printer. The printer will now appear in all Mac OS X print dialogs.

Mac OS X 10.5

In Mac OS X 10.5, you may automatically or manually set up your computer to print to your RTC's printer. For automatic configuration, UITS provides a printer utility to install IUB Student Technology Center (STC) and RTC printers; see How do I obtain and use the IU Printer Finder utility? To configure your computer manually:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences... . In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Print & Fax.

  2. Click + (the plus sign) to add a new printer, and in the window that opens, click the IP icon.

  3. Next to "Protocol:", select Line Printer Daemon - LPD, which should be the default. Find your RTC's network queue name, server name, and model from At IUB, what are the STC and RTC network printer paths and models? Note that these will differ for different RTCs. In the "Address:" field, enter the following: bl-uits-pa18.ads.iu.edu

In the "Queue:" field, enter the queue that corresponds to the printing group type you wish to use (e.g., for black-and-white printing in all STCs, enter stcprt).

  4. Give the printer a descriptive name and location in the appropriate fields. In the pull-down list beside "Print Using:", select Select a driver to use..., and then select the printer model appropriate for the printing group you selected:

    • For stcprt and rtcprt, select HP LaserJet 4350.
    • For stc_tabloid, select HP LaserJet 8100.
    • For stc_business_color, select HP Color LaserJet 4700dn.
    • For stc_color_hp5550, select HP Color LaserJet 5550dtn.

  5. Click Add. An "Installable Options" menu will appear. You may make adjustments here, such as enabling the option to print duplex (double-sided), and then click Continue.

  6. When it's installed, your RTC printer should appear in the Print & Fax window. If you have more than one printer installed (e.g., if you also have a personal printer in your room), you can choose a default printer from the list in the menu next to "Default Printer:".
