In the IUIE, in Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher, why is my report output garbled, and how do I fix this?

Internet Explorer 5.5 will launch Notepad to display certain types of text-formatted output files. IUIE reports are created as .lis files by SQR, and therefore use \n to signal the end of a line, whereas Microsoft uses CR-LF (carriage return-line feed) to signal the end of a line. This causes Notepad to place everything on one line, since it does not understand the SQR end-of-line marker. This is not an issue with Netscape or other versions of Internet Explorer, as they will open these files within the browser window with the correct formatting.

Opening the .lis files in WordPad instead of Notepad will resolve the issue, and there are two ways to do so:

  • Instead of selecting Open or Wait for Output when running a report (depending on the type of report object you are using), select Save to Disk or Send to Completed Reports and then Save to Disk. You will receive the customary window allowing you the option to designate the name and location for saving the file on your computer. After doing this, you can open the file using WordPad (or another word processing application), and the file will display properly.

  • You can change the default program Internet Explorer uses to open .lis files:

    1. In Windows Explorer, from the Tools menu, select Folder Options... .
    2. Under the File Types tab, click New.
    3. In the "File Extension" field, enter lis as the extension and click OK. That item will now appear at the top of the "Extensions" list. Click it once to highlight it, and then click the Change... button.
    4. Click Select the program from a list, and then click OK.
    5. Scroll through the list of programs, select WordPad, and then click OK.
