In Outlook 2003 and earlier, what is the "Logon network security" setting, and how do I change it?
When you're using Microsoft Outlook for Windows to access your Exchange account, you can manipulate the "Logon network security" setting for different levels of security.
Note: For workstations that have a default login
account or a user that accesses multiple accounts, you should set the
"Logon network security" setting to None for the appropriate
accounts.
To change the "Logon network security" setting, follow the directions below for your version of Outlook:
Outlook 2003
- From the
Startmenu, select eitherControl Panel, orSettingsand thenControl Panel.
- Double-click the
Mailicon, and then clickEmail Accounts....
- Under "Email", select
View or change existing email accounts. ClickNext.
- Select
Microsoft Exchange Serverand clickChange....
- Click
More Settings.... In the resulting dialog box, click theSecuritytab.
- In the "User Identification" area, select
Always prompt for user name and passwordif it is not already selected. (It is checked by default.)
- Under "Logon Network Security",
Kerberos/NTLM Password Authenticationshould be selected. ClickApply, thenOK, thenNext, and thenFinish.
Earlier versions of Outlook
- From the
Startmenu, select eitherControl Panel, orSettingsand thenControl Panel.
- Double-click the
Mailicon.
- In the resulting dialog box, click
Show Profiles.... From theGeneraltab, select the profile for which you want to change the security setting. Then clickPropertiesand follow the appropriate steps below:
- In Outlook 2002:
- Click
Email Accounts, selectView or change existing email accounts, and clickNext. - Highlight
Microsoft Exchange Server. ClickChange..., and then clickMore Settings....
- Click
- In other versions of Outlook:
From the
Servicestab, in the text field beneath "The following information services are set up in this profile:", selectMicrosoft Exchange Server, and clickProperties.
- In Outlook 2002:
- In the resulting dialog box, click the
Advancedtab. Toward the bottom of theAdvancedtab's page, beneath "Logon network security:", click the downward pointing arrow (on the right of the text field) to display a list:
- To set Outlook to accept your network login credentials, select
NT Password Authentication. This means that after you log into the network, you won't have to log into the Exchange server when you open Outlook. - To set Outlook to prompt you for credentials each time you open
it, select
None. This is the most secure setting. You will have to supply login credentials for the Exchange server each time you open Outlook. - At Indiana University, do not select the
Distributed Password Authenticationoption. UITS does not support this option in the IU Exchange environment.

OK, thenNext, and thenFinish. Then selectClose, and clickOK. - In other versions of Outlook, click
OK, and thenOKagain.
