In Outlook 2003 and earlier, what is the "Logon network security" setting, and how do I change it?

When you're using Microsoft Outlook for Windows to access your Exchange account, you can manipulate the "Logon network security" setting for different levels of security.

Note: For workstations that have a default login account or a user that accesses multiple accounts, you should set the "Logon network security" setting to None for the appropriate accounts.

To change the "Logon network security" setting, follow the directions below for your version of Outlook:

Outlook 2003

  1. From the Start menu, select either Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Mail icon, and then click Email Accounts... .

  3. Under "Email", select View or change existing email accounts. Click Next.

  4. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Change... .

  5. Click More Settings... . In the resulting dialog box, click the Security tab.

  6. In the "User Identification" area, select Always prompt for user name and password if it is not already selected. (It is checked by default.)

  7. Under "Logon Network Security", Kerberos/NTLM Password Authentication should be selected. Click Apply, then OK, then Next, and then Finish.

Earlier versions of Outlook

  1. From the Start menu, select either Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Mail icon.

  3. In the resulting dialog box, click Show Profiles... . From the General tab, select the profile for which you want to change the security setting. Then click Properties and follow the appropriate steps below:

    • In Outlook 2002:

      1. Click Email Accounts, select View or change existing email accounts, and click Next.
      2. Highlight Microsoft Exchange Server. Click Change... , and then click More Settings... .

    • In other versions of Outlook:

From the Services tab, in the text field beneath "The following information services are set up in this profile:", select Microsoft Exchange Server, and click Properties.

  4. In the resulting dialog box, click the Advanced tab. Toward the bottom of the Advanced tab's page, beneath "Logon network security:", click the downward pointing arrow (on the right of the text field) to display a list:

    • To set Outlook to accept your network login credentials, select NT Password Authentication. This means that after you log into the network, you won't have to log into the Exchange server when you open Outlook.
    • To set Outlook to prompt you for credentials each time you open it, select None. This is the most secure setting. You will have to supply login credentials for the Exchange server each time you open Outlook.
    • At Indiana University, do not select the Distributed Password Authentication option. UITS does not support this option in the IU Exchange environment.

  5. To save your changes:

    • In Outlook 2002, click OK, then Next, and then Finish. Then select Close, and click OK.
    • In other versions of Outlook, click OK, and then OK again.
