At IU, in Outlook 2002 or 2003, how do I read my Cyrus or Exchange email using IMAP?
To set up Outlook 2002 or 2003 to access your Cyrus or Exchange email at Indiana University via IMAP, follow these steps:
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectEmail Accounts....
- Select
Add new email accountand clickNext.
- Choose
IMAPand clickNext.
- Next to "Your Name:", enter the name you want to appear in the
"From:" headers of email messages you send.
- Next to "Email address:", enter your IU email address.
If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- Next to "User Name:", enter your email username.
- Next to "Password:", type your password. If you are the only
person who has access to your computer, you may want Outlook to save
your password. If this is the case, check
Remember password. If you do not want Outlook to save your password, make sureRemember passwordis unchecked. You will then be prompted for your password each time you send and receive messages.
- Next to "Incoming Mail server (IMAP):", enter the name of your
IMAP server:
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
imap.iu.edu. - To access your Exchange account, enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu.
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter

In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:
mail-relay.iu.edu - In the
Email Accountswindow, clickMore Settings....
- Click the
Advancedtab, and under "Incoming server (IMAP):" and "Outgoing server (SMTP):", checkThis server requires a secure connection (SSL). Be sure to check the box for each server. Change the outgoing server to465.Note: For information about a known conflict with SSL and Symantec AntiVirus 9 (SAV 9), see When trying to send email, why am I getting an SSL or SMTP error?
- Click the
Outgoing Servertab. CheckMy outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and then selectUse same settings as my incoming mail server.Note: Do not check
Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA); this will prevent you from sending mail. - Click
OK, thenNext, and thenFinish.
If you have folders in IU Webmail that don't appear in Outlook, follow these steps:
- After following the steps above and making sure Outlook
can download messages from your Inbox, right-click the
account name in the folder list and choose
IMAP folders.
- Click the
Querybutton.
- Click each folder you would like to access and click the
Subscribebutton. A folder icon will appear after each folder you subscribe to.
- When you're finished, click
OKorCloseat the bottom.
The folders will be listed under the Inbox; you may have to click the
+ (plus sign) to see them.
