At IU, using Outlook Express or Entourage, how do I store my sent items on the mailbox server?

This document explains how to save your sent items on the server where your mailbox is located in Outlook Express or Entourage at Indiana University. To do this, you must use the IMAP protocol.

Windows and Cyrus mail

Outlook Express 6

1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts... .
   
   
2. Highlight the name of your account, and choose Properties.
   
   
3. Select the IMAP tab.
   
   
4. Change the root folder path to: INBOX.

   Make sure to put the  .  (period) after INBOX.

5. Check the box beside Store special folders on the IMAP server.
   
   
6. Change the "Sent items path" to sent-mail .

Outlook Express 5.x and earlier

1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts... .
   
   
2. At the top of the window, click the Mail tab.
   
   
3. Select the name of your IMAP server, which should be imap.iu.edu.
   
   
4. Double-click the name of the IMAP server, and click the IMAP tab.
   
   
5. Change the root folder path to: INBOX. Make sure to put the  .  (period) after INBOX.
   
   
6. Check the box beside Store special folders on IMAP server.
   
   
7. Change the "Sent items path" to sent-mail .
   
   
8. At the bottom of the window, click Apply.
   
   
9. Click OK and then Close.

Windows and an Exchange account

1. In Outlook Express, from the Tools menu, select Accounts... .
   
   
2. At the top of the window, click the Mail tab.
   
   
3. Double-click the name of your IMAP server (at IU, it is imap.exchange.iu.edu), and click the IMAP tab.
   
   
4. Check the box beside Store special folders on IMAP server.
   
   
5. Make sure the "Sent items path" is set to Sent Items .
   
   
6. At the bottom of the window, click Apply.
   
   
7. At the bottom of the window, click OK and then Close.

Mac OS or Mac OS X and Outlook Express 5 or Entourage

If you are using Entourage v.X, 2004, or 2008 for Mac OS X to read your Cyrus or Exchange account mail:

1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
   
   
2. In the Accounts window, highlight the name of your account and choose Edit. Then click the Advanced tab.
   
   
3. In the "Special Folders" section, check the box next to Store sent messages in this IMAP folder: . From the pull-down menu, select Choose... . Select the folder in which you want to save your mail, and click Choose.
   
   
4. If you also want to save your drafts on the server, check the box next to Store drafts in this IMAP folder: . From the pull-down menu, select Choose... . Select the folder in which you want to save your drafts, and click Choose.
   
   
5. Click OK to save your changes, and close the Accounts window.

If you are using Outlook Express 5 or Entourage 2001 for Mac OS to read your Cyrus or Exchange account mail:

1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
   
   
2. In the Accounts window, highlight the name of your account, choose Edit, and click the Advanced tab.
   
   
3. Check the box beside Store special folders on the IMAP server.
   
   
4. Click Choose... to specify the server folder for your sent items. You may also use it to specify the location to store your drafts.
   
   
5. Click OK to save your changes, and close the Accounts window.
