In Microsoft Outlook, how can I import my Personal Address Book into my Contacts folder on the Exchange server?

Note: While you can no longer create new Personal Address Books (.pab files) in Outlook 2010 or 2007, you can add the names and addresses from old .pab files to the Outlook Address Book by converting the old files and importing them into your Contacts folder, which you can display in the Outlook Address Book.

Note: UITS recommends that you use the Outlook address book (which is created automatically from information in your Contacts folder) instead of a Personal Address Book. The contacts will be located on the server and accessible from any Outlook client as well as Outlook Web App, whereas a Personal Address Book is only available from the hard drive of the computer on which you create it.

In Microsoft Outlook, to import your Personal Address Book into your Contacts folder on the Exchange server:

  1. In Outlook 2010, from the File tab, select Open, and then click Import.

In Outlook 2007 or earlier, from the File menu, select Import and Export.

  2. You will be prompted to choose an action to perform; from the list that appears, click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.

  3. In the next window, select Personal Address Book from the list, and then click Next.

  4. In the next window, you will see personal folders and a list of folders on your Exchange account. Click the folder that says Contacts, and then click Next.

  5. Follow the directions in the next window, and then click Finish.
