In Symantec Endpoint Protection and AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Windows, how do I create a new scan?

Note: For best results, run security software scans in Safe Mode. If you don't scan in Safe Mode, the software may not be able to detect or remove each security threat it finds. For more information about Safe Mode and how to enter it, see In Windows, how can I boot into Safe Mode?

Symantec Endpoint Protection

  1. Open Endpoint Protection. In the left window, click Scan for threats.

  2. Click Create a New Scan.

  3. Select Custom Scan, and then click Next.

  4. Check the drives you wish to scan. To scan a specific file or folder, click the + (plus sign) to expand the drive containing the folder or file, and browse until you have located the specific file or folder you want to scan. Click Next.

  5. You will have several options for customizing your scan. To scan the selected drives and folders using the default scan options, click Next.

  6. You will have the option to schedule this scan to run periodically, on every startup, or on demand. Choose the desired option, and then click Next.

  7. Enter a name for the custom scan, and then click Finish.

  8. The new scan should now be visible in the Scans list. Right-click the new scan and select Scan now to start the scan.

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV CE)

Running a one-time scan

  1. Open SAV/NAV CE. In the left window, click the + (plus sign) next to the Scan folder, and then select either Custom Scan or Scan Computer from the drop-down menu.

  2. Check the drives you wish to scan. To scan a specific file or folder, click the + (plus sign) to expand the drive containing the folder or file, and browse until you have located the specific file or folder you are searching for.

  3. After you have finished making your selections, click the Scan button to begin the scan.

Saving a custom scan for future use

  1. From the Edit menu, choose New Custom Scan or New User-defined Scan.

  2. Select from any available options and select the drives, folders, or files you wish to scan. When prompted, enter a name and description for the scan, clicking Next as needed. Make further customizations by clicking Options when it is available.

  3. After customizing your scan, click Save. To execute the scan, click the + (plus sign) next to either the User-defined Scans folder or the Custom Scans folder to expand it, and then double-click the scan you wish to execute.

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff for free via IUware) for your operating system, being sure to upgrade safely (see In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?) and to update your virus definitions daily and scan your computer weekly.
