In Microsoft Word for Windows, how do I open a document that is not in Word format?

The default installation of Microsoft Word is capable of opening documents from many different editors, but some of the necessary document converters are not included. If you are unable to open a document in Word, you may need to download and install additional converters.

For information on available converters and how to download them, see article 212265 at the Microsoft Help and Support web site. This article refers to the Office 2003 Converter Pack, but that converter pack will download only the converters appropriate to your version of Office. It will work with Microsoft Word 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003.

Search Microsoft Help and Support.
