ARCHIVED: In Windows 2000, how do I install AppleTalk for printing?

Note: Currently, Windows XP does not support AppleTalk.

In general, it is best to use IP printing when printing from a Windows 2000 computer to an Apple printer. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Windows 2000, how do I use IP printing?

Note: AppleTalk and IPX routing are no longer available on the Indiana University network.

Windows 2000 Professional can use the AppleTalk protocol to print to Apple printers on the network. AppleTalk with Windows 2000 is only for printing; it will not allow you to share files with a Macintosh computer, either as a client or as a server.

To install AppleTalk:

  1. Click Start and select Settings, then Network and Dial-up Connections.

  2. Double-click Local Area Connections. Click the Properties button, and then click Install.

  3. Select Protocol, and then click Add... .

  4. Select AppleTalk Protocol, and then click OK.

  5. Click Close until you have closed all the dialog boxes.
To install the printer:
  1. Click Start and select Settings, then Printers.

  2. Double-click the Add Printer icon.

  3. The Add Printer Wizard will start. Click Next.

  4. Select Local Printer. Make sure that there is not a check in the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer checkbox. If there is one, remove it. Click Next.

  5. The screen will prompt you to select a printer port. Select Create a new port, and then use the drop-down menu to select AppleTalk Printing Device. Click Next.

  6. A list of AppleTalk print servers will appear. Find the name of your server in the list and double-click it.

  7. A list of printers on your server will appear. Highlight the printer to which you wish to print, and click OK.

  8. A message will appear and ask if you want to capture the printer. Be certain to click No.

  9. A dialog box will ask you to select the make and model of the printer from a list. Highlight the name of the printer in the list and click Next. Alternately, you should click Have Disk if you have a CD or diskette with the printer driver on it.

  10. After you have selected the correct drivers, you will have the option to change the default name of the printer and choose it as your default printer. Click Next.

  11. You will then have the option to share your printer. In most cases you will not want to. Click Next.

  12. A prompt will appear asking you to print a test page. Select Yes and click Next.

  13. If there is no problem with your printed test page, click Finish. If there is a problem, you may need to contact the administrator for that printer in order to find out if you have indeed selected the correct printer and have the correct drivers installed.
