In Windows, why does Symantec software try to dial long distance during a LiveUpdate?

Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV) tries to make a long distance call if the LiveUpdate settings are set to retrieve the LiveUpdate by dialing into Symantec's BBS server. You can correct the problem by specifying that LiveUpdates should be done through the Internet.

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff for free via IUware) for your operating system, being sure to upgrade safely (see In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?) and to update your virus definitions daily and scan your computer weekly. For instructions, see:

Endpoint Protection

Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to About navigation settings in Windows.

  1. In Windows 7 or Vista, from the Start menu, open Control Panel. In Windows XP, from the Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Symantec LiveUpdate.

  3. Click the ISP tab. Under "Where should LiveUpdate get your Internet Settings?", select Internet Options in the Control Panel.

  4. Click Configure to open the Internet Properties window. If you have a persistent Internet connection, choose Never dial a connection. If you use a modem to connect to the Internet, you must connect before running LiveUpdate.

  5. Click OK to exit the Internet Properties window, and then click OK again to exit the LiveUpdate Configuration window.

SAV/NAV Corporate Edition

  1. In Windows 7 or Vista, from the Start menu, open Control Panel. In Windows XP, from the Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  4. Click the Internet tab. If you have a persistent Internet connection, Connect to the Internet using a modem should be unchecked. If you use a modem to connect to the Internet, you must connect before running LiveUpdate.

  5. Click OK.
