In Windows, how do I transfer files to and from my account on Mercury?

If your Windows computer is connected to the Internet, you can use secure FTP (SFTP) to transfer files for your Mypage web page from your computer to your account on Mercury and vice versa.

If you use an HTML editor (e.g., Dreamweaver), you can use the software's built-in upload feature to move files to Mercury only if it permits secure uploads. Check the program's documentation for information about secure file transfer.

SSH Secure Shell for Windows is an SSH communications application that includes SFTP. At Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI, this software is available in the Student Technology Centers (STCs). Until recently, this program was available for download from IUware; if you have this software on your computer, you can also use it there to transfer files to and from Mercury.

Note: SSH Secure Shell Client for Windows is no longer available for download from IUware or the SSH Communications Security web site. For alternative SSH and SFTP clients, see At IU, what SSH/SFTP clients are supported and where can I get them?

To connect to Mercury using SSH Secure Shell for Windows:

Note: If you're already connected to Mercury via SSH, skip the steps below. Instead, from the Window menu, select New File Transfer, and proceed to the instructions for uploading or downloading files.

  1. If you connect via modem, first establish your connection.

  2. If you are in an STC, open a file transfer window by selecting Start, then Programs, then Utilities, and then Secure FTP. If you have downloaded SSH Secure Shell and are running it on your own computer, select Start, then Programs, then SSH Secure Shell, and then Secure File Transfer Client.

Note: The Windows XP default desktop view and Start menu are different from the Windows Classic View (e.g., in Windows 2000). Therefore, navigating to certain items can be different. In the interest of broad applicability, most Knowledge Base instructions assume you are using Classic View. For information about switching your Windows XP default view to Classic View, see In Windows XP, how do I switch to the Windows Classic View, Classic theme, or Classic Control Panel?

  3. From the File menu, select Connect... .

  4. In the Connect to Remote Host window, enter the following:

    1. In the "Host Name:" field, type mercury.uits.indiana.edu .
    2. In the "User Name:" field, type your username.
    3. Click Connect.
    4. When you are prompted for a password, enter your password.

When the software connects to Mercury, you should see a list of your files there.
