In Windows 2000, how do I manually set up Dial-up Networking to connect to IUB or IUPUI?
Note: This document explains how to manually set up a PPP connection in Windows 2000. UITS recommends that you set up a PPP connection to Indiana University for Windows 2000 by using either the PPP Wizard or Connect to IU software, which automatically does what this document explains how to do manually. You can get the PPP Wizard and the Connect to IU software from the IUware CD or from the IUware Online web page at:
http://iuware.indiana.edu/To manually configure a PPP connection for Windows 2000 to dial into IU Bloomington or IUPUI, follow the steps below:
- From the
Startmenu, selectSettings, and thenControl Panel.
- Double-click
Network & Dial-up Connections, and then double-clickMake New Connection. ClickNext.
- Select
Dial-up to the Internet, and then clickNext.
- Select
I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN), and then clickNext.
- Select
I connect through a phone line and a modem, and then clickNext. Enter the appropriate telephone number (e.g.,856-5200at IUB or278-5620at IUPUI). For more, see What are the dial-up numbers for all IU campuses?
- Click
Advanced. Make sure "Connection Type" isPPPand "Login Procedure" isNone.
- Click the
Addressestab. For "IP address", make sureInternet service provider automatically provides oneis selected.
- Click
OK, and then clickNext.
- Enter your username and password for your account (change
Administratorto your username). ClickNext.
- Enter a connection name (e.g.,
IU), and clickNext. Then, under "Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now?", selectNo. ClickNext.
- Uncheck the option
To connect to the Internet immediately, select this box. ClickFinish.
- At IUB, right-click the new connection you just created, and then
click
Properties. ClickAlternates, and clickAddto include the additional number (856-5202) for the IUB modem pool. ClickOKtwice.
- Click the
Optionstab, and make sureDisplay progress while connectingis selected. Click theNetworkingtab.
- Highlight
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)and clickProperties, and thenAdvanced.
- Click the
DNStab. SelectAppend these DNS suffixes (in order):, and then clickAdd.
- In the text field, enter
indiana.edufor IUB oriupui.edufor IUPUI.
- Click
Add, and then clickAddagain. In the text field, enterucs.indiana.edufor IUB, oruits.iupui.edufor IUPUI.
- Click
Add, and then clickOKthree times.
