In Emacs, how can I edit remote files using FTP?
In Emacs, to edit remote files using FTP, do the following:
- Press
C-x C-f.
- Delete all text after the
Find file:prompt.
- Enter a filename with the following format: //username@host:filename
- Enter the account password.
Emacs might bring up a help menu when you try to delete all of the
text after the Find file: prompt. This usually means
there is a problem with the configuration of your communications
software. Often, communications software is configured so that the
Backspace key sends a Ctrl-h character;
Emacs normally interprets this as the command for requesting help.
If the help menu comes up, press q to exit
the Emacs help, and continue with the instructions using the
Delete key instead.
For instructions on changing the behavior of the
Backspace key in your communications software, see
When I'm using the UITS shared central systems, why does the Backspace key misbehave?
Note: You need to use a client that supports secure FTP to transfer files to and from Indiana University's central systems. For more, see At IU, what SSH/SFTP clients are supported and where can I get them?
