Using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus for Windows, how do I scan network drives for viruses?

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec virus protection software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff free of charge via IUware) for your operating system. Be sure to upgrade safely, update your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly. See In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?

See:

Regardless of which antivirus product you use, you will need to map a network drive before scanning it for viruses; see At IU, using Windows, how do I access a shared resource on another Windows computer? Once you have mapped the network drive, follow the appropriate instructions below.

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Right-click the icon for the desired network drive and choose Scan for Viruses... .

Note: This method of scanning network drives is available for most Symantec/Norton products, but you can use the following directions for an alternative way of performing this process.

Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition

  1. From the Start menu, select Programs or All Programs, then Symantec Client Security or Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and then Symantec AntiVirus Client or Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

Alternatively, in the system tray portion of the Taskbar (typically on the lower right of your screen), right-click the Symantec/Norton AntiVirus icon (which looks like a shield) and select Open Symantec/Norton AntiVirus... .

  2. From the Scan menu, select either Scan Computer or Custom Scan.

  3. Select the appropriate drives and click Scan.
