In my web browser, why am I getting errors about not being able to connect to a proxy server?

If you receive errors that mention proxies, your web browser is probably configured to use a proxy server. If you connect directly to the Internet, which is nearly always the case at Indiana University, you must disable this feature.

Note: If your computer is part of a managed workgroup, check with your administrator to see if you connect using a proxy server before changing any network settings.

Follow the appropriate instructions below to disable the proxy server.

Internet Explorer 5.x and later

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options... , and then click the Connections tab.

  2. Click LAN Settings... . Make sure Automatically detect settings is checked.

  3. Deselect the checkboxes under "Proxy Server" and click OK.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0

  1. In Windows, from the Tools menu, select Options... .

In Mac OS X, from the Firefox menu, select Preferences... .

  2. Click Advanced, and then select the Network tab.

  3. Click Settings, and then select No Proxy.

  4. Click OK twice.

Mozilla Firefox 2.x

  1. In Windows, from the Tools menu, select Options... .

In Mac OS X, from the Firefox menu, select Preferences... . On the left, make sure General is selected.

  2. Click Connection Settings... .

  3. Select Auto-detect proxy settings for this network, if available. On earlier versions, this setting may be missing. In that case, select Direct connection to the Internet. You will not get automatic detection, and will have to manually enter your proxy settings if you move the computer to a network that uses a proxy server.

  4. Click OK twice.
