In my web browser, why am I getting errors about not being able to connect to a proxy server?
If you receive errors that mention proxies, your web browser is probably configured to use a proxy server. If you connect directly to the Internet, which is nearly always the case at Indiana University, you must disable this feature.
Note: If your computer is part of a managed workgroup, check with your administrator to see if you connect using a proxy server before changing any network settings.
Follow the appropriate instructions below to disable the proxy server.
Internet Explorer 5.x and later
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectInternet Options..., and then click theConnectionstab.
- Click
LAN Settings.... Make sureAutomatically detect settingsis checked.
- Deselect the checkboxes under "Proxy Server" and click
OK.
Mozilla Firefox 3.0
- In Windows, from the
Toolsmenu, selectOptions....In Mac OS X, from the
Firefoxmenu, selectPreferences.... - Click
Advanced, and then select theNetworktab.
- Click
Settings, and then selectNo Proxy.
- Click
OKtwice.
Mozilla Firefox 2.x
- In Windows, from the
Toolsmenu, selectOptions....In Mac OS X, from the
Firefoxmenu, selectPreferences.... On the left, make sureGeneralis selected. - Click
Connection Settings....
- Select
Auto-detect proxy settings for this network, if available. On earlier versions, this setting may be missing. In that case, selectDirect connection to the Internet. You will not get automatic detection, and will have to manually enter your proxy settings if you move the computer to a network that uses a proxy server.
- Click
OKtwice.
