In Windows 7 and earlier, how do I change the DNS and WINS server IP numbers?

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Log into Windows as an administrator, and from the Start menu, select Control Panel. Select Network and Sharing Center, or Network and Internet and then Network and Sharing Center.

    Note: At Indiana University, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see What is the principle of least privilege?

  2. In Windows 7, click Local Area Connection and choose the Properties tab. In Vista, on the taskbar, select Manage Network Connections, and under "LAN or High Speed Internet", right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

  3. On the General tab, you should see a list below "The connection uses the following items:". Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties below.

  4. By default, Windows will be set to obtain the DNS server's address automatically. Change that to Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the DNS numbers for your Internet service provider (ISP).

    Note: You can enter the third IUB DNS number in the window that appears after you carry out step 7 below.

    At IUB, use the following numbers:

    129.79.1.1 129.79.5.100 129.79.8.50

    At IUPUI, use:

    134.68.1.9 134.68.1.2
  5. Click Advanced... , and then click the DNS tab.

  6. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order): , and click Add... to add appropriate entries.

    At IUB, this list should include:

    indiana.edu iu.edu ads.iu.edu

    At IUPUI, include:

    uits.iupui.edu iupui.edu indiana.edu iu.edu ads.iu.edu
  7. Select the WINS tab. Click Add and enter the appropriate WINS addresses:

    At IUB, the WINS servers are:

    129.79.1.200 129.79.5.200 134.68.220.14

    At IUPUI, the WINS servers are:

    134.68.220.14 134.68.220.15 129.79.1.200
  8. Click OK or Close in each open window to close it and save your changes.

Windows XP

Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to About navigation settings in Windows.

  1. Log into Windows XP as an administrator, and from the Start menu, select Settings, then Network Connections.

  2. Under "LAN or High Speed Internet", right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

    129.79.1.200 129.79.5.200 134.68.220.14

    At IUPUI, the WINS servers are:

    134.68.220.14 134.68.220.15 129.79.1.200
  8. Click OK or Close in each open window to close it and save your changes.
