ARCHIVED: How can I search for information on the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is so large and changes so quickly that no central, comprehensive catalog of its contents is possible. However, many tools exist for searching periodically compiled databases of web sites for particular topics or resources. These tools vary in their scope and accuracy, and you may need to use several search tools before locating the information you want.

The Reference Department of the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries maintains a Searching the Web page that describes and links to a number of search engines and subject guides.

Also, the Internet Public Library maintains a Web Searching Tips page that lists search engines and provides tips for searching, as well as descriptions of some of the tools available.
