For Mac OS and Mac OS X, what text editors are available?
In addition to Apple's built-in text editors TextEdit and SimpleText, which you can use to edit and create text documents in Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.x and earlier, respectively, a number of third-party text editors are available. A few examples are:
- BBEdit and TextWrangler
- BBEdit and TextWrangler are both produced by Barebones software.
Because of its broad feature set and support for plug-ins,
BBEdit, in particular, is popular with web designers and other
scripters. TextWrangler has fewer features, but you can download it for
free. For more information about either program, visit the Barebones web site.
- Tex-Edit Plus
- In many ways, this shareware application is an enhanced
version of SimpleText. It can do anything SimpleText can, but can
edit files that are larger than 32KB and also has a number of extra
features SimpleText doesn't have. It is available from
Trans-Tex Software.
- Nisus Writer Express
- Developed by Nisus Software, Nisus Writer Express has a friendly
user interface, multilanguage support, and support for several
different file formats, including Rich Text Format (RTF),
Microsoft Word, and Word Perfect. Download a free 30-day trial version
or purchase Nisus Writer Express from the
Nisus web site.
- Style
- Like Tex-Edit Plus, Style is an enhanced version of SimpleText.
It can do most of the things SimpleText can and has a number of
enhancements, including the ability to save files as stand-alone
documents and handle files that are longer than 32KB. This shareware
is available from Merzwaren.
- Alpha and Alphatk
- Both Alpha and Alphatk are derived from the original Alpha program
developed by Pete Keleher. Alpha is based on Tcl and thus highly
customizable to anyone familiar with that language. It is similar to
Emacs in that it supports different modes, so if you are
editing, for example, an HTML file, TeX
document, or Perl script, it behaves differently.
Currently, Alpha is maintained by and available
from the Alpha Cabal web site.
Alphatk is a cross-platform version of Alpha that is being developed separately. It is available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Unix from the Alphatk web site.
