At IU, how do I unsubscribe from a LISTSERV mailing list?

At Indiana University, you may unsubscribe from a LISTSERV list via email or via the LISTSERV web interface.

Unsubscribe via email

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

  Campus Server address
  IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
  IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
  IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
  IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
  IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
  IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

To unsubscribe from a LISTSERV list, send the following line in the body (not the subject) of a mail message addressed to the LISTSERV server:

unsubscribe listname

Replace listname with the name of the list from which you want to unsubscribe.

For example, to unsubscribe from a list called NT-DEMO-L, you would send the following message to LISTSERV:

unsubscribe nt-demo-l

LISTSERV will send you a mail message acknowledging your request. However, you might get an error message in response to your unsubscription request. Most commonly, unsubscription problems occur because the email address on the list does not match the address from which you send the unsubscribe command. Try again, using the email account that you used to subscribe yourself. If that doesn't work, see If you cannot unsubscribe below.

Unsubscribe using the LISTERV web interface

For information about using the LISTSERV web interface, see At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?

Once you have accessed the web interface, follow these steps:

  1. Click Log In. You will be required to log in using your LISTSERV personal password. For more information on creating a LISTSERV personal password, see In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password?

  2. Click Subscriber's Corner to see the lists to which you are currently subscribed.

  3. Check the box next to each list you want to leave.

  4. At the bottom of the "List Names" column, select the Unsubscribe option from the drop-down list.

  5. Click Submit.

If you cannot unsubscribe

If you cannot unsubscribe yourself from a list, contact the list owner and ask to be unsubscribed from the list. You can reach the list owner through an address similar to the following:

listname-request@listservhost.domain

Replace listname with the name of the list, and listservhost.domain with the Internet hostname of the system running the LISTSERV software.
