In Windows, how do I create a new folder?
Folders are subdirectories which can contain files and other folders. You can create new folders using one of the methods below:
Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, and XP
In Windows Explorer (or Windows NT Explorer)
- Select the drive and folder in which you wish to create a new
folder. You may also create folders on the desktop.
- From the
Filemenu, selectNew, thenFolder. A folder calledNew Folderwill appear.
- Enter a name for the folder.
On the desktop
- Right-click the desktop (i.e., any part of the screen not occupied
by a window).
- Select
New, thenFolder. A new folder will appear on the desktop. Enter a name for the folder.
Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and Windows NT 3.51
- Start
File Manager, and select the drive on which you wish to create a folder.
- Select the folder in which you would like to create the new
folder. If you wish to create a new folder off the root folder of a
drive, select the root folder of the drive (usually designated as
C:\orD:).
- From the
Filemenu, selectCreate Directory. You will be asked to name the directory. In DOS/Windows 3.1, folder (or directory) names are limited to eight characters in length, and may have a three-character extension (i.e., as with files, you may include a.[dot] and an extra three letters in a folder's name).
