In Emacs, how do I properly set up a .emacs file?

In its online documentation, Emacs has suggestions on how to set up your .emacs file. To access this documentation, use the Info browser. Follow these steps:

  1. To open the Info browser, enter: M-x info
  2. Once you are in the browser, move your cursor to the "* Emacs" heading and press Enter. Info will access the Emacs manual.

  3. Page down to the "Customization" section (it's pretty far down on the list) and press Enter again. You will find information about how to bind keys, set variables, and make keyboard macros. There is also a section about the .emacs initialization file that includes examples of a few common customizations.
